In this third segment of the first episode of "Kitchen Expansion" it's discovered that the plumbing needs to be rerouted and the ceiling needs to be reinforced. Laminated beams are nailed in place at the ceiling for more support.[Materials List and step-by-step instructions are below.]

The homeowners are unhappy with the cramped kitchen area...
|
| |

and the cabinets are too antiquated.
|
| |

The solution: Knock out the adjoining wall and open the kitchen up...
|
| |

into a spacious, eye-popping, contemporary treasure.

Before the demolition is completed, host Paul Ryan and Kevin (homeowner) find out some plumbing will have to be rerouted and the kitchen ceiling will have to be reinforced. Paul knows it will be easy to deal with the supply lines, but the plumbing in the ceiling (figure A) is another story. It will have to be cut out and rerouted!Solving the Problem - First, cut two lam beams (figure B) to span the width of the kitchen, which will be used to reinforce the floor, which was weakened to make room for the plumbing, above.
- Reinforce the wall by fitting two 2 x 4 boards vertically in the existing wall frame to support the weight of the two lam beams. Use an impulse nailer to secure the 2 x 4's.
- Leverage the lam beam into place using a 2 x 4 and hammer and then nail it in. Nail another lam beam adjacent to the first one.
- Once the lam beams are in place (figure C), you will have the support to take out any remaining wall.
