In this second segment of the first episode of "Kitchen Expansion" the contractor arrives to help host Paul Ryan and the homeowners (Keith and Miquel) start the demolition. They tear out the cabinets, countertops, and old flooring. Then they remove the wall to the dining room.[Materials List and step-by-step instructions are below.]

The homeowners are unhappy with the cramped kitchen area...
|
| |

and the cabinets are too antiquated.
|
| |

The solution: Knock out the adjoining wall and open the kitchen up...
|
| |

into a spacious, eye-popping, contemporary treasure.

DemolitionBefore the demolition begins you should know that the homeowners wanted this wall (figure A) to come out to create a pass-through, but the structural engineers said it was a load-bearing wall, which means they would have had to do work with the wall below it in the basement, and this was just too costly. The wall between the kitchen and the formal dining room, however, doesn't bear a load so it could come down. A couple of "lam beams" (figure B) will go up for added support. - If the cabinets are not being saved, use a hammer to detach the doors and break out the cabinets (figure C).
- Use a reciprocating saw (figure D) to cut the countertop into pieces for easy removal.
- Cut into the floor with a circular saw and then remove it in chunks.
- To remove the dining room-kitchen adjoining wall, first pound a row of holes into the drywall (figure E), then tear or peel it off in chunks.
Safety Alert: Work carefully because you never know what you might find inside the wall, such as wires, etc.
