1x stock to create trim pieces

    1. Before building decorative column, measure from ceiling to floor. Transfer measurement to 1 x 8 stock that will be used as the core section of the column. (Note: Make columns shorter than full height of ceiling-floor measurement; the base and crown molding will hide the gap.) Make cuts on miter saw. Route boards to match other columns in house (if necessary).

    2. Cut 2 x 4 blocks that will be used for top and bottom.

    3. Secure 1 x 8s together, using glue and trim nailer to carefully secure. Add nail every few inches as needed. Repeat process for second section of column.

    4. Place floor block inside bottom of half-column and tack in place with trim nailer. Place other block at top and knock into place. Once column is raised, nail the bottom block into the floor to hold it stationary.

    5. Adjust column until plumb, then nail top block into the ceiling. Join second section of column with stationary piece. Secure with trim nailer.

    6. Add dimensional pieces of column and nail into place. Install some of the lower vertical pieces and nail in place. Then, add decorative trim and corner molding.

    7. Measure the top of column for base and crown molding. Install base and secure, then add crown molding above. Use a little glue to secure as needed. Add putty to nail holes.

    8. Add coat of paint over the entire column. Attach all drawer and cabinet hardware to complete the project.
