With all the cabinets secured, tile work complete and electrical outlets and lighting in place, all that's needed are the finishing touches. Here, host Fuad Reveiz creates a custom column, adds decorative trim molding, and installs the cabinet hardware. On the intermediate Weekend Remodeling 1-5 scale of difficulty, this project rates a 2. Time to complete: 15 hours over 2 days
Materials:Wall and base cabinets Granite countertop Pry bar Tape measure Level Chalk line Large felt-tip marker Reciprocating saw Hammer Utility knife Circular saw Chop saw Punch saw Drill with bits Framing square Framing nailer Trim nailer Latex paint Paint brush, rags, bucket Notched trowel Rubber float Tile cutter/wet saw Wire strippers Electrical tester Stud finder Cut-out electrical boxes and outlet Non-metallic building electrical wire Wire nuts Under cabinet light Tile Epoxy tile grout and mastic 1x stock to create trim pieces
- Before building decorative column, measure from ceiling to floor. Transfer measurement to 1 x 8 stock that will be used as the core section of the column. (Note: Make columns shorter than full height of ceiling-floor measurement; the base and crown molding will hide the gap.) Make cuts on miter saw. Route boards to match other columns in house (if necessary).
- Cut 2 x 4 blocks that will be used for top and bottom.
- Secure 1 x 8s together, using glue and trim nailer to carefully secure. Add nail every few inches as needed. Repeat process for second section of column.
- Place floor block inside bottom of half-column and tack in place with trim nailer. Place other block at top and knock into place. Once column is raised, nail the bottom block into the floor to hold it stationary.
- Adjust column until plumb, then nail top block into the ceiling. Join second section of column with stationary piece. Secure with trim nailer.
- Add dimensional pieces of column and nail into place. Install some of the lower vertical pieces and nail in place. Then, add decorative trim and corner molding.
- Measure the top of column for base and crown molding. Install base and secure, then add crown molding above. Use a little glue to secure as needed. Add putty to nail holes.
- Add coat of paint over the entire column. Attach all drawer and cabinet hardware to complete the project.
