    1. Damage to the cabinet can be fixed with rock hard water putty. Create a dam by taping a piece of cardboard to the side of the cabinet (figure A).

    2. Fill in the place to be repaired with rock hard water putty (figure B). It sets up in minutes, so you need to work fast. When it dries, it will be as hard as the existing cabinet wood.

    3. Get the exact measurements for reconfiguring the cabinet from the refrigerator spec sheet.

    4. Measure to the height of the refrigerator and make a mark for the bottom of the cabinet. Then, measure from top down to that mark -- that is how large the cabinet should be.

    5. Use a table saw with the fence set to the correct width. First, lay the cabinet on its back to cut, and then lay it on its side

Note: If you were to cut the bottom off of the cabinet instead of the top, the cabinet would not be as strong when you put it back together.

    6. Add a new top made of plywood that is ripped to size (figure C) and secure it with an impulse nailer.

    7. Finish the top with the old face frame salvaged from the piece that was cut off.

    8. Rip 1x to act as fill stock to bring the cabinet out to the correct width (figure D).

    9. Drill pilot holes and attach the fill with screws.

    10. Clamp the face frames together (figure E) and finish securing.

In the next segment, the cabinet box that goes above the refrigerator is modified.
