- Nine times out of 10 when you do renovations to your kitchen and replace your appliances, you have to modify the space, cabinets, etc.
- The homeowners moved their refrigerator to another wall. A shell was built for the refrigerator, and in order to do that, they used the refrigerator spec sheet to determine the size of the built-in (figure A).
- The basic plan is to cut and hang two new side panels -- called "skins." Then, one of the old upper cabinets will be recycled by cutting down the height and adding to the width to make it fit. Next, the cabinet doors will be installed that are cut to size. Finally, once everything is painted the refrigerator will be added for a built-in look (figure B).
- Since floors are never totally square, take four measurements for the skins -- two in the front and two in the back of where the refrigerator will sit.
- For the two side panels, cut skin material to size. Use a straight-edged piece of lumber as a guide. Mark cut line, and in order to make a straight cut, put circular saw on mark and line up the straight edge with the shoe of the circular saw.
Note: Ryan used 4 x 8 Baltic birch for its stability. - Measure the correct distance and set the other edge of the straight edge. Clamp the straight edge down.
- To ensure you do not cut through the sawhorses, put a couple of 2 x 4's under the board (figure C).
Note: Make sure that the lumber you use as your straight edge has one "true" side. - Run the saw along the straight edge, ensuring a perfect cut (figure D).
- Next, cut the board to the height of the ceiling.
- Set board in place and check the level. Jack up the bottom of the board with a prybar to make sure the panel is tight to the ceiling, and nail first skins to the cabinet. Secure with screws.
- Cut face frames and nail to skins for a nice finished look.
- In order to attach the next skin, you need to secure nailing cleats to the wall and floor. Measure over the distance of the refrigerator and draw a line. Cut one by cleats and secure the cleats to the wall and the floor.
In the next segment, a cabinet box is built for the refrigerator.
