|
 |

In our "Reclaimed Classic" kitchen renovation, this '70s kitchen didn't fit into ...
|
| |

 the 1914 prairie style house.
|
| |

Host Paul Ryan and our homeowners renovated the kitchen and turned it into a turn-of-the-century delight ...
|
| |

 with great modern updates.

In this third of four episodes, the custom-built banquette is installed and the faucet and lights put in.

Faucet Hookup- Insert the hot and cold water valve bodies up through the counter from underneath (figure A).
- Use the escutcheon to gauge for the proper height. When it is in the correct position, tighten the connections above and below the counter (figure B). Then, snug the escutcheon down.
- Insert the diverter tee and hand tighten the nut from below. Then, snug the escutcheon to hold it in place (figure C).
- The spout is secured with a retaining ring, which is first hand tightened then gently tightened with a wrench.
Tip: Wrap the wrench in tape so you don't scratch the stainless steel. - Put the faucets in place.
Note: By hooking up the faucet themselves, the homeowners saved approximately $300.

Install Range Hood- Determine the height of the hood from manufacturer's recommendations and local code requirements. Use a laser to mark and level the center line (figure D).
- Then, using those lines, tape the template to the wall.
- Before drilling into the tile, start the hole with a nail set (figure E) to eliminate the drill from wandering all over the new tile.
- Use a masonry bit and hammer drill to go through ceramic tile.
- If the holes don't hit studs, use anchors (figure F).
Note: Hoods can weigh 50 pounds, so you need to make sure they are well secured to the wall. - Attach mounting hooks to the wall.
- Hang the hood on the mounting hooks. At first it will just rest on the mounting hooks, and then secure the hood to the wall with screws.
- Attach vent collar with a few more self-tapping screws.
- Connect wiring -- make sure the power is off.
Note: Call an electrician if you're not comfortable doing the wiring. - Cut the vent to length, then slip it over the collar (figure G).
- Wrap the seam with foil tape (figure H) and secure it with screws.
- Finally, the vent cover can be attached to a small mounting bracket screwed into the wall.
In the next segment, the lights are installed.
