    Grouting Subway Tile

    1. Let the tile set for 24 hours before grouting.

    2. Apply the grout, pushing into the seams with a grout float (figure A).

    3. Clean up with a sponge.

    4. After it dries to a haze, take a cloth to polish it off the tiles.

    Banquette Installation

Note: The homeowners had the banquette built and the cost was approximately $2,000, but they saved $500 by installing it themselves.

    1. Dry fit banquette and use a compass to determine the size of the gap between the unit and the wall (figure B).

    2. Scribe a line along the edge to be trimmed.

    3. Cut close to the line with a circular saw, then take the rest off with a belt sander with a coarse 80-grit belt (figure C).

Note: Most power tools come cordless. The one used on the show had an 18-volt rechargeable battery.

Safety Tip: Any time you are using power tools it is best to remove any rings or jewelry because they could get caught in the tool.

    4. Line up the second piece of banquette and secure with clamps (figure D).

    5. Drill pilot holes, then attach the two pieces with 1-5/8" deck screws.

    6. Check for level and shim if necessary.

    7. Find and mark studs in wall.

    8. Place shims between cabinet and wall (figure E) to take up the gap and secure unit to studs in wall with screws.

Note: Even though the unit was level, shims were put between the unit and the gap in the wall so the screws won't warp the wood.

    9. Make a template out of cardboard (figure F) and carefully trace outline on banquette top.

    10. Use a jigsaw to cut out piece, and then a belt sander to smooth it out.

    11. Nail pieces to banquette.

    12. Put a piece of trim along the front of the seating area (figure G).

In the next segment, the banquette is attached to wall and wainscoting put up.
