| Classic Reclaimed (2 of 4): Classic Additions to Wall |
From "Kitchen Renovations" episode DKTN-311 |

 |

In our "Reclaimed Classic" kitchen renovation, this '70s kitchen didn't fit into ...
|
| |

 the 1914 prairie style house.
|
| |

Host Paul Ryan and our homeowners renovated the kitchen and turned it into a turn-of-the-century delight ...
|

 with great modern updates.

Shelving- Cut the shelving rails to length and attach the second bracket using glue (figure A) and nails.
- Use a laser level to mark the height of the first shelf (figure B).
- Pin nail the unit up and countersink pilot holes into the corners of the bracket.
- The screws then go in at an angle into the studs (figure C).

Subway Tile- Lay the tiles along the length of the wall (figure D) to see if there will be any short pieces at the end of the run.
- To set the tiles, use a 3/16" V-notched trowel to apply the pre-mixed mastic to the area to be tiled (figure E). Mastic has a working time of about 30 minutes so only apply to approximately a 4 square foot working area. The homeowners chose ceramic tile, and ceramic tile is very porous on the back. The mastic actually absorbs into the back of the tile giving very good adhesion.
FYI: Mastic originally came from the sap of the mastic tree, an evergreen. - Begin to place the first row of tiles on the wall.
- Add spacers to maintain the proper distance between surfaces (figure F). Give each tile a little wiggle to spread the adhesive.
Tip: Put up as many full tiles as you can before you start cutting. There is nothing to using the wet saw, just push the tiles gently through and let the carbide blade do the work. Note: A small wet saw costs approximately $100 or you can rent a tile cutter for $25-$50 a day. Tip: Be sure and leave sufficient room around the switch boxes. - For straight cuts, you can also use a tile cutter. Score tile along the cut line and push down to snap tile in two (figure G).
- The tile needs to set up for about 24 hours before you can grout it.
