In our "Reclaimed Classic" kitchen renovation, this '70s kitchen didn't fit into ...

| |

 the 1914 prairie style house.
|
| |

Host Paul Ryan and our homeowners renovated the kitchen and turned it into a turn-of-the-century delight ...

 with great modern updates.

- Our host, Paul Ryan, decided to use a combination of pine and poplar for the trim pieces for the window. Poplar is a hard wood and has a finer grain than oak, is less expensive than oak, and paints up better than oak.
Note: 1 x 6 poplar costs approximately $1.50/linear ft., and 1 x 6 pine costs approximately $1.10/linear ft. - If you need to do a lot of ripping, cut the pieces to approximate length first. It is easier to get a straight rip with shorter pieces.
- Use a compound miter saw to make the cross cuts (figure A). With the wider stock, the sliding feature comes in handy.
- To rip the boards, use the table saw. Make sure the boards are flat and flush against the fence (figure B).
- A stool is the interior decorative windowsill. You need to make cuts so the window lift will be accessible and the sill will sit closer to the countertop. Cut out the ears of the stool. First cut across the board to the proper depth (ours is 3/4"), then raise the saw until it clears the first cut line (ours is 3/8"). Move the fence over, adjust to the proper depth to receive the sill and make the second cut (figure C).
Safety Tip: Always keep hands away from the blade! - Place the stool in the window, place a couple of short shim pieces on the ends, check the level, and secure with a power nailer.
Note: Shim pieces are needed because the old sill bows up in the middle. - With the stool in place, take measurements for the casing. Cut pieces to size, line up flush with the window and nail in place (figure D).
In the next segment, the designer makes shelves for the wall and installation of the subway begins.
