- If your walls are not square, create a template to cut the countertop to fit the existing cavity by scribing a line with a scribing block (figure A).
- Transfer the contour of the wall on the template.
- Score the template with a utility knife and use painting tape to secure the two pieces of template together (figure B).
- Remember to mark the top and back of your template.
- Line up the template with the front edge of the countertop. Tape the template to the countertop and trace it onto the wood (figure C).
- Use a rail guided saw with a vacuum attached to cut the countertop. If using hard wood, choose the sharpest saw blade available, preferably a brand new one. The blade will dull quickly, so have extras on hand.
Note: You can also use a traditional circular saw with a clamp on guide. - Use a belt sander to smooth the edges of the countertops with 40-60 grit sandpaper.
- Dry fit the countertops and, if using wood, screw in from underneath (figure D).
