    1. The homeowners decided on a quartz countertop (figure A) because of its beauty and durability. Quartz countertops are made in Spain. It is ground up granite with the soft parts removed, leaving just the granite. They add epoxy and it ends up being harder than granite. It is less expensive than granite, and because it is non-porous, it is easier to take care of than granite.

Note: Quartz countertops cost approximately $70/sq. ft. installed.

    2. Before the quartz countertops are installed, they reinstalled the cabinet boxes using 2-1/2" screws to secure the cabinets to the studs.

    3. Check to make sure your cabinets are level.

    4. If your cabinets are not level, cut build-up strips (figure B) using medium density fiberboard. The build-up strips are used to level the counter, adding height where it is needed.

    5. Dry fit the countertop and sink (figure C).

Note: For custom fabricated sink, search for stainless steel fabricators in your area. Chris and Tami had a professional drill the holes needed for their stainless sink.

    6. The countertop was secured. There were rough spots on the wall, so they patched them and applied a layer of skim coat for the tiling that will be done later on. The upper cabinets were also reinstalled.

In the next segment the countertop is installed.
