Note: Wood crown molding can be expensive -- up to $10 - $20 a running foot. The homeowner chose to install extruded polystyrene molding at the cost of $1 - $2 a foot. It is inexpensive and easy to use and once painted, it is hard to tell the difference!

    1. Start by establishing the height of your crown molding.

DIY Tip: You can rent a 360-degree laser level for approximately $50 - $60 per day. You mount it to a temporary post at the correct level. The level shines a perfectly level line around the entire room (figure A). Use that reference line to set the molding on the walls.

    2. To mount the molding, cut inch and a half strips of half-inch plywood to serve as a cleat to mount the molding. To secure the cleat to the wall apply some construction adhesive, and then screw the cleat into dry wall anchors (figure B). Keep an eye on the laser light.

    3. Normally, if you are trimming out a wall and have flat trim, where the pieces come together you would make a miter cut at a 45-degree angle. For crown molding that doesn't sit flat against the wall, you do a compound miter using a sliding compound miter saw. Most of the time you can find the saws with preset marks so you can set the angles and make the cut. Some saws have diagrams on them (figure C) to help you set up the cuts. The bed of the saw is rotated to the marked preset (31.6 degrees is common for most crown molding).

    4. Make sure the adjustment knob is nice and tight (figure D), then set your second compound angle (called the bevel). Go to the preset marked at 34 degrees.

    5. Put the hold down clamp on and then use a fine tooth finish blade to get a smooth cut through the polystyrene. Cut quickly or the material may melt. Reset the saw to the opposite angle and cut quickly through another piece of molding. After you have cut the molding, clear away any debris from the edge (figure E).

    6. To mount the molding, run a bead of panel adhesive along the first angle where the cleat will set onto the first molding. Tag the molding to the cleat using an impulse nailer (figure F). The material is light, so the glue and pin nails are all it takes to hold the molding in place.

Note: Use a nail set to sink any nails that stick out.

    7. On the corners fit the pieces together. Caulk the corners before painting.

In the next segment, the track lighting system is installed.
