| Urban Conversion (3 of 4): Installing the Countertop and Range Hood |
From "Kitchen Renovations" episode DKTN-307 |
|
|
 |

Host Paul Ryan and our homeowner (Erica) take an old 1920s restaurant kitchen that had been empty for years ...
|
| |

and turn it into an eye popper ...
|
| |

without losing its sense of history.
|
| |

In this third part of "Urban Conversions," free-standing shelves were built.
|
| |

The walls were covered in tiles ...
|
| |

and the counters and stove hood were installed.

Installing the Countertop- Attach cleats to sides of the cabinets and rear wall using construction adhesive and screws.
- Dry fit the countertops to make sure your measurements are correct. Once you are sure the countertops fit, place dollops of 100 percent silicone (figure A) on the counter top and then gently drop the countertop in place (figure B).
- Use matching tinted silicone caulk to cover seams along edges of the wall.
- Let the counter sit for at least eight hours for silicone to dry.

Installing the Hood- There are three main components to the range hood the homeowner chose -- the range hood itself, the venting and the flue cover. Measure your center point and hood placement. Carefully tape the template to the wall and drill the holes for the mounting bracket (figure C).
- Screw the mounting bracket on the wall.
- Drop the hood onto the mounting bracket. The bar on the hood slips over the eye bracket (figure D). Screw in the housing and that provides the real strength.
- Use a drywall jab saw (also called a keyhole saw) to cut the hole through the wall (figure E) for the vent elbow.
- Measure from the elbow to the hood outlet and transfer that measurement to the vent pipe. Use aviation snips to cut the pipe to size.
Safety Tip: Always wear gloves when cutting metal. - Screw the vent pipe in place and then place the duct cover in place. The cover extends to the top of the wall (figure F) and attaches to an elbow bracket with a couple of screws.
- The homeowner had HVAC professionals hook up the outside exhaust.
