From "Kitchen Renovations" episode DKTN-307 |
|
|
 |

Host Paul Ryan and our homeowner (Erica) take an old 1920s restaurant kitchen that had been empty for years ...
|
| |

and turn it into an eye popper ...
|
| |

without losing its sense of history.
|
| |

In this third part of "Urban Conversions," free-standing shelves were built.
|
| |

The walls were covered in tiles ...
|
| |

and the counters and stove hood were installed.

Grouting the Tile- Use a fortified tinted polymer grout that matches the limestone tile. You also need to use an unsanded mix if you added glass tiles. The grout comes as a powder and is mixed with water until you have the consistency of peanut butter.
- Gently push the grout into the seams using a high quality grout float. Work at an angle (figure A) so that you don't drag the grout out of the seams.
- Let the grout set for approximately five minutes until it dries to a haze.
- Wipe the grout off with a wet sponge. In an hour, go back and use a dry towel to wipe the tiles clean (figure B).
- In about a week, after all the moisture has evaporated, put a sealer on the wall.
Fitting the Countertop- The homeowner chose a lava countertop that is actually made with lava. The lava is from volcanic mountains and it has to be heated up 1,850 degrees. It is porous so they put a glaze on top and it soaks right into the rock and it gives you a very durable and beautiful finish (figure C).
- The homeowner had a gap by the wall and the countertop needs to be flush. You can cut away the drywall. Scribing in the drywall is a trick the professionals use when they don't want to cut the countertop.
- To scribe the drywall, draw a line to mark the height of the countertop (figure D) and then remove the countertop.
- Use a Japanese pull saw to cut through the corner bead. Also use the pull saw to scribe the rest of the cuts (figure E) nice and flush. Then, go back with a utility knife.
- An old chisel is just the thing to chip away the dry wall to accommodate the counter.
Installing Sink- Put wood adhesive on cleats and then clamp the cleats in place (figure F) and then screw them to the cabinets.
- Once the side cleats are on, attach a third cleat on the back wall to support the rear of the two side cleats.
Note: Countersink the holes to avoid splitting the wood; and watch out for pipes in the wall. - Set the sink in place and screw it in.
In the next segment, the countertop and range hood are installed.
