    1. The homeowner chose the legs and base for the table from a company online and came up with her own top. She chose reclaimed wood for the top.

    2. The table was assembled with a mortise and tendon system. Apply wood glue to the mortise of one leg and then use a brush to spread the glue evenly (figure A).

Tip: Wood glue only has a working time of about five minutes -- so work fast!

    3. Paint a thin coating of glue onto the matching tenon. Wiggle or tap the tenon into the mortise (figure B). Make sure the apron is facing in the right direction.

    4. Put more glue on the tenon on the other end then gently tap the next leg, already glued, into position.

    5. If there is any excess glue, scrape it off with a knife or chisel (figure C), and then wipe the rest off with a toothbrush or rag.

    6. The rest of the legs go together in the same way. Once the legs are on, use nylon ratchet straps to hold the apron assembly tight while the glue dries. Protect the corners with plywood or small pieces of cardboard (figure D). You want the straps to be snug, but not too tight. Let it dry overnight.

    7. To put the top together, the wood planks are joined together using a biscuit joiner (figure E). A biscuit joiner cuts a slot in the planks you will be using and then you insert a biscuit (figure F) and it holds the planks together. The biscuit joiner cuts the same depth grooves in all the planks so that when you put them together you have a nice smooth surface.

Woodworker's Tip: Draw a "V" on the planks so you will know how the boards will fit together later on.

    8. Make a mark every 12 inches across the joint (figure G) to show where the biscuits go.

    9. Set the biscuit joiner to the right height and depth and then make the plunge cut -- it is fast and fun!

    10. Using a paint brush, glue along the edges of each plank while you insert the glued up biscuit (figure H).

    11. Then, just fit the planks together. Don't forget to line up the "V" that you drew earlier. Once you have the planks glued, use bar clamps to snug the planks tight (figure I).

Note: Do not wipe the wet glue off now because it will smear the top. Let it dry and then scrape if off.

    12. Let it dry overnight.

    13. Once completely dried, cut the ends off the table.

Tip: Use a guide for your saw to get a nice straight cut.

    14. Give the top of the table a final sanding and finish however you desire.

In the next episode of Kitchen Renovations "Urban Conversions" (3 of 4), our host adds an innovative hidden support shelving system, and then he installs an elegant Mexican limestone tile. To wrap this phase a stainless range hood is installed.
