For this week's kitchen renovation, host Paul Ryan and the homeowner and her son started with a boring suburban kitchen ...
    PHOTO

    with "no" personality ...

    1. Paint the cabinet boxes with a brush and install new hinges on the cabinet doors (figure A).

Note: The homeowner chose a darker gray for the cabinet boxes and lighter gray for the doors. She also chose a green to paint the kitchen walls.

    2. A refrigerator was chosen by the homeowner that was larger than the space available. A professional contractor came in and redid a wall and ceiling cabinet to allow room for the new refrigerator.

    3. The homeowner decided to leave the cabinet doors off an end cabinet to create a more open feeling to the kitchen. The stiles had to be removed where the old doors met and for that, you can use a Japanese pull saw (figure B) to make fine cuts.

    4. Place trim around the cabinets to cover up where the hinges had been. Use corner trim and notch it to fit around the cabinets (figure C).

    5. Use one by material to nail across the cabinets (figure D) to make them more secure and give them a more finished look.

    6. If the existing holes for the new drawer handles are too narrow, you have to drill new holes. Use silicone to fill in the old holes.

    7. Use a template (figure E) so that the drawer handles will be spaced the same throughout all the cabinets.

    8. Just a new coat of paint and new hardware can make a big difference in your kitchen cabinets.
