    Installing the Floor

    1. Before you begin the work, empty the kitchen out and remove all the drawers and cabinet doors. Plus, remove the hinges and drawer handles, etc.

    2. For the floors, you need approximately a quarter inch on each side for expansion and contraction. You can use a sliding compound miter saw (figure A) to cut the floor planks to the lengths you need. If you do not have a compound miter saw, you could use a table saw.

Note: Laminate flooring is approximately $4 square foot -- add $3 per square foot if you have someone else install it for you.

    3. Cut end boards to 3 ft., 2 ft., and 1 ft. so that the seams are staggered rather than lined up evenly.

    4. To hold the ends of the boards, drive in a small screw (figure B). The screw acts as a stop. After the boards are installed, remove the screw.

    5. Getting the boards in place takes a little practice. Just wiggle them in until you get them all in place.

    6. To snug the boards, use a small piece of flooring as a tapping block (figure C).

Tips: Use your foot to hold the end of the board so it will snug up to the next one (figure D). To pull an end board tight, you can use a pry bar (figure E).

    7. Once new floating floors (figure F) are installed, you can see what an updated, new look it brings to your kitchen.

    Painting the Cabinets

    1. An easy and quick way to paint the cabinets is to use a power sprayer. Airless sprayers are good for the outside if you are painting a house or fence, etc., but a high volume low-pressure sprayer really concentrates the paint for jobs like cabinets.

    2. The paint has to be prepped first so that you don't clog the sprayer. Make sure the paint is well mixed. Pour about one cup of latex paint into a mixing cup and add paint conditioner (according to directions). To spray the paint, it has to be thin to the proper consistency. Check the thickness with a viscosity testing cup (figure G) that comes with the sprayer. Fill the cup and see how long it takes to empty. For latex paint, it should empty in approximately 30 seconds.

Note: Do not use water to mix latex paint, because it will not spray properly. You can purchase the paint conditioner at home center stores.

    3. When the paint is ready, pour it into the spray pump canister using a paint filter to prevent lumps or debris from clogging the sprayer.

    4. Spraying latex is pretty safe, but it is a good idea to use a respirator (figure H), especially in a confined space. Feather the spray at the end of each pass to get good coverage.
