    1. For this DIY family, art is a way of life. The mother is a published writer, the daughter teaches art, and the son is a musician, but their kitchen was far was artistic! The first step was to meet with a designer and chose more vibrant colors (figure A). The new appliances for the kitchen are cobalt blue, so the designer suggested a green for the walls and backsplash, a teal blue on the soffits and ceiling, and grays for the cabinets.

    2. A laminate floor with a wood look was chosen for the floor that had an unusual color (figure B) to match the blue/gray watercolor scheme they went with.

    3. The floor has a padding underneath (figure C) which eliminates the need for rosin paper or underlayment. It is a one-step product that floats on the floor and keeps it simple, and helps keep the time and cost down.

    4. With a floating floor, you don't have to pull up the old flooring, or put glue down. It is a locking system. The planks have an aluminum channel (figure D). You just set the piece in and slide it into place and once you set it down, it is locked in.

    5. The floor needs to lie underneath the doorjamb, so the doorjamb had to be trimmed. You can use a Japanese pull saw (figure E) which is thin and flexible, or you can rent a jamb saw (approximately rents for $25 a day) to make it easier.

    6. Set the jamb saw to the proper depth and carefully rock it into the jamb (figure F). Pry out the wood using a pry bar and hammer, leaving space for the new flooring.
