- Trim the ears of the drawers on a table saw. Line the drawer up and adjust the blade so it will cut just above the top of the ear (figure A).
Note: You don't have to cut the whole front off the kitchen door when you are refacing it. If you do, the door might fall apart. The cavity that the drawer slides into is cut a little bit deeper, and the door is flush when you push it in.
- Use a straight edge to get your kitchen door hardware in position before inserting the screws for your hinges. (Steve and Michelle chose European cup hinges because they are hidden).
- Make pilot holes so that the screws won't split the door. It is best to start both screws before completely screwing them (figure B) in order to keep the cup flat.
Tip: If you order kitchen doors with predrilled holes for the hardware, it will save you a lot of time.
- The key to getting the drawer front on properly is to make sure it is centered on the original drawer (figure C).
- Mark it, then clamp it (figure D), and then drill the pilot holes and secure it.
Tip: Check the depth of your drill bit to avoid drilling through the drawer face.
- The last step for the drawer front is to stain or paint it and install the door knob.
In the next segment, the lumicor panels for the cabinet doors will be installed.
