    Figure A
Prepping the Subfloor for Terrazzo Tile

    1. Make sure the staples are pounded down, and check to make sure by running a 5" or 6" putty knife over the floor.

    2. Mix a small batch of skim coat according to directions on the package.

    3. Using a straight-edge trowel spread a very thin layer of skim coat over the seams (figure A).

    4. Once it's almost dry, scrape the excess off the edges.

    5. Sweep and vacuum.

    Measuring for Tile Installation

    1. Determine the longest run of the kitchen, and for this particular project it's from the hallway to the back door.

    2. Measure from the outside wall to the center of this run -- and make a mark (figure B).

    3. Go farther down the wall and make another mark the same distance out from the wall.

    4. Use these marks to snap a line the full run of the room, and this line should be parallel to the outside wall. This line will be your reference mark to begin tiling.

    5. Spray the chalk line with hair spray to set the line (figure C).

    6. Dry fit the tiles (figure D) to the outside wall to determine where the first row of full tiles will be. Make a mark, transfer this same measurement down the wall and make another mark.

    7. Snap a line using these two marks.

In the next segment, Ryan and the homeowners install the tile.
