    Tiling the Backsplash

    1. First be sure to protect the stainless countertop by covering it with drop clothes or paper.

    2. Next, use a wet saw to make a few inset cuts (figure A) on the tiles that will be going over receptacles.

    3. Mix a small batch of thinset by following the directions on the bag. Make more as needed because it dries very quickly.

    4. Using a square notched trowel, spread thinset on a small portion of the lower part of the wall.

    5. Start at the bottom outside edge and work your way across (figure B). Again only a small area as it does dry quickly.

    6. Set in the tile and press it firmly to the wall. Butt the next tile right up against the first tile (figure C) because we won't be grouting this backsplash area. (The homeowners wanted to go for a sleeker look.)

    7. When finished with the bottom row move back out to the outside edge and lay in next row.

    Installing Cabinet Hardware

    1. The doors came with holes cut out for cup hinges (European cup hinges were used for this project -- figure D), and using the factory pre-drilled cup holes, insert the hinges. Take a straight edge and lay it against the back edges of the hinges to make sure they are lined up with each other on the door.

    2. Using a drill with a vix bit, drill pilot holes for hinges. Insert screws and screw them in (figure E) using drill with appropriate bit.

    3. Now hold the door up to the cabinet to determine where you want it. Pre-drill pilot holes on the inside edge using the drill and vix bit.

Tips: It's a good idea to have helper when putting on the doors. It's difficult to hold a door, mark where the hinges go and drill the holes with only two hands.

To make sure the doors are level all the way across the top or bottom, use a long piece of 1x or a 6' level, clamp it to the top or bottom edge of the cabinet boxes. Line each door up to this as you go.

    4. When putting on door handles it's easiest if you can use a jig or a template. If not, then determine where you want the knob to go on the door, measure each the same from side and bottom or top edge, mark, pre-drill holes and attach knobs (figure F).

    Tiling the Soffit

    1. Use silicone caulk to adhere tile to the wall behind stove.

    2. It's always a good idea to measure and lay out tile to see how they fit into the space. You don't want to have a whole tile on one end and a sliver on the other. Also make a line so you know where level is.

    3. Start on the bottom row (figure G) and work your way across one row at a time. Go back each time to same starting edge.

Note: If tiles do need to be cut use the wet saw.

In the final episode of our "Chef Kitchen" renovation, a terrazzo floor is installed and cabinet door fronts are inserted. And finally it's time to bring in the professional appliances.
