    Figure C
    Installing the Upper Cabinets

    1. The first step for installing cabinets is to find the studs in the walls. Make vertical lines floor to ceiling. This is where you will anchor your cabinets.

    2. Since the cabinets are going to the ceiling, it's important to make sure the ceiling is level (figure A), and this also will help you to determine the top height of the cabinets.

Note: Unfortunately the ceiling is "not" level. In fact, there's a drop of approximately 3/4" over eight feet, which means the first upper cabinet will be installed 3/4" down from the ceiling and the last one will be flush. The crown molding will cover the gap at the top after the cabinets are installed.

    3. At the spot where the ceiling is the lowest make a mark. Now measure down the height of the upper cabinet box (48" for this particular model), make a mark. From this mark take a level and make a line across the wall. This is the line you will use to line up the cabinet bottom edge to.

Remember: Be sure to anchor the cabinets to the studs in the wall.

    4. Start with the corner cabinet. Mark and pre-drill holes in the back of the cabinet boxes (figure B).

    5. Lift the cabinet up into place. You will need helpers or a mechanical lift to do this safely.

    6. Drill in screws using a drill with a screw bit. We used 2-1/2" screws.

    7. Next lift the adjacent cabinets (using a mechanical lift) into place for a dry fit, and clamp the cabinets together (figure C) so that when they're fastened there won't be any gaps.

    8. Mark where you will want pre-drill for anchor screws so that they line up with the studs.

    9. Take the cabinet down and drill the holes.

    10. Lift cabinet back into place and pre-drill pilot holes in the face frame, using the impact driver and appropriate length screws screw cabinet face frames together.

Tip: You can use wax to lubricate the screw so it doesn't split the wood.

    11. Drill anchor screws through the back of the cabinets into the wall. Make sure the screws bite into something as they hit the studs.

In the next segment Ryan and the homeowners install the base cabinets.
