Installing the VentNote: When selecting a hood, consult a heating contractor for make-up air requirements.
- Remove window trim using a pry bar and hammer so it doesn't get damaged when you break into the wall. Mark the trim so you remember where it goes.
- Use a hammer to break the drywall around perimeter of wall, and then pull out the drywall and insulation (figure A).
- Measure where the vent needs to go out and mark a circle on the brick wall.
- When knocking through a brick wall use a hammer drill and carbide bit to drill four pilot holes. Then drill a series of holes around the rest of the circle (figure B) and, finally, use a chisel bit to connect the holes. This will lessen the risk of loosening the surrounding brick.
- Remove the center using a hammer and a chisel bit. Because this is a double wall, repeat the process for the outside wall. Drill from outside to get a clean cut.
In the next segment we'll place the vent in the hole, put up the backer board and install the vertical soffit that will encase the vent.
