In this first segment you'll meet Todd, the homeowner. He and host Paul Ryan outline a plan for a hip urban contemporary update to his kitchen. The strategy is to make the kitchen match the sense of style throughout the rest of the house. The kitchen is cleared of old appliances and the upper cabinets are removed to open up the view.

Clearing the Kitchen and Prepping for the Renovation

1. Remove the cabinet doors and label them to avoid confusion when they go back on. Put hinge screws back into holes so they don't get lost.

2. To remove the bank of cabinets, use a brace made of 2 x 4s (figure A) to hold the upper cabinet while you unscrew them.

In the next segment the old countertop comes off and the new laminate one is installed.
