    Building a Banquet

The homeowners decided on add a banquet to the kitchen for some extra storage. At first, the couple thought about having a custom bench made, but with the advice of the designer they went with the idea of taking two furniture drawers, putting them together and creating a banquet area. The choice of maple matches the rest of the kitchen.

    1. Use 2 x 4s to construct the platform frame. Nail the platform together using an impulse nailer.

    2. Nail one side of platform, flip it up so you can nail other side straight down.

    3. Clamp the two-drawer units together using a cabinet clamp (figure A).

    4. Use a piece of 3/8" stock to fill the gap between the two drawers (figure B). Just slip it into place and drill screws to hold it into place. Make sure the screws go through the fir stock between the drawer units.

    5. Because the support platform will end just shy of the cabinet, you'll need two nailer blocks, one on each end. Use an impulse nailer to hold them into place.

    6. Next, secure the platform by screwing it into the studs in the wall.

    7. Secure the rest of the banquet to the studs in the wall.

    8. Attach the top seating area of the banquet by attaching a couple of screws from the bottom.

    9. Finally, insert the drawers.

    10. Add pulls to drawers and add trim to the toekick.

In the next segment Ryan and the homeowners get busy with all the final touches that turn this kitchen into a timeless-traditional classic.
