In this segment host Paul Ryan talks with the flooring installer, who shares tips for making relief cuts so the boards will sit flush over the heating wires. Then he shares some more flooring tips. Materials and Tools: For Repairing and Installing Subfloor Safety glasses Gloves Pry bar 5/8" plywood Tape measure 4' x 8' sheets of plywood Spade bit Jigsaw Table saw Rapid-load screw gun Galvanized nails Impulse nailer For Hardwood Floor Installation Prefinished Hardwood Safety glasses Knee pads Gloves Rosin paper Hammer Tacker Chalkline Tape measure Pencil Pneumatic nailer Spline 2" staples Air compressor Mallet Compound miter saw Cork Ban saw Dado blade
Note: During any floor installation some tricky situations could arise, and in the case of this particular project, the homeowners had a fireplace in the living room in which the hardwood floor had to be custom fit.Tips for Tricky Floor Installation - Right next to the fireplace there are some in-floor heating wires (figure A) that stick up from the subfloor and a curved hearth of the fireplace to contend with on this particular job.
Solution: Mark the underside of the board where the wires hit and put tape on top of the board (figure B) to show where to make the cut. Using a dado blade on your table saw, cut some of the thickness away. The other trick is to make a number of shallow passes, so be sure to raise the blade about an 1/8" for each pass. Hold the square edge of the board against the guide and push with even pressure. If the cut is wider than the dado blade, make additional passes. Lay the dadoed strip of wood over the wires and connect. Be sure to avoid the wires when nailing the hardwood. Caution: Keep your hands away from the blade at all times!
Another tricky situation arose due to the curved hearth of the fireplace. Solution: Lay a strip of cork around the perimeter of the brick base of the fireplace (figure C). This will fill space yet still allow the floor to expand and contract. To cut the boards to fit the arc of the brick, double the height of the cork and then lay in another board up to the cork. When you get the space fit in as close as possible, take a small scrap of flooring, hold it against the cork (figure D) and hold a marker on the inside edge. Slide the board around the arc and cork and you will have marked all the boards now to cut. (You're using the cork as a guide to scribe. Cut the boards using a ban saw because it's easier to cut curved cuts with this saw. When using a band saw, set the guide as close to the work as possible. This will prevent the blade from flexing and binding. Work slowly and maintain blade speed. Slide the boards back in place and they should fit the arc perfectly. In the third episode of this project, Ryan and the homeowners install new semi-custom-made maple cabinets. Then they show how to create beautiful custom-made concrete countertops.
