    Harwood Floor Installation Continued

    1. Now that the starter row of hardwood is down, you're ready to go. Begin by laying in board off both sides of the starter board.

    2. Use 2" staples in your nailer. Note that you can rent a pneumatic nailer and compressor for about $70/day. The compressor should be set a 60-70 psi. The nailer seats the board (figure A) and drives the staples through the tongue at an angle into the subfloor. You can use a manual nailer, but for a job this size it was best to use the pneumatic nailer.

    3. Make sure the ends of the boards butt up to each other tightly. When you get to the end of the room having only one board left don't forget to leave a space. To assure a 1/4" gap lay the last board of row next to the second last board mark it a 1/4" shorter (figure B) then the space between the end of the second to last board and the wall.

    4. Use a compound miter saw to make simply cuts. A new blade will ensure clean cuts.

    5. Cover the entire floor except for the area under cabinets. Measure and mark how far out cabinets will come. Install one board past this line (figure C). This ensures that the front toe kick will rest on this board.

In the last segment of Pt. 2 of this "Timeless Traditional" kitchen renovation, Ryan and a professional floor installer will share tips for laying the boards around some tricky places, such as a fireplace.
