Note: Whenever you're renovating a kitchen it's important to create the "kitchen triangle" (figure A), which is nothing more than making sure that the distance between the three major work areas of the kitchen -- stove, sink and refrigerator -- are no less than three feet and no more than seven feet apart. Thus, creating the perfect triangle.Removing Appliances
Before the demolition for this job could begin, the appliances in the kitchen and the furniture in the family room had to be removed.
- Make sure to unhook the gas line before moving the stove out, and be sure to use a dolly and have enough helpers (figure B).
- Measure the exit route to make sure the appliances will fit. You may need to remove the refrigerator door.
Tip: Call your local recycling program to see if they take old appliances.
Demolition- Start with the countertop by using a circular saw to make cuts through the top to make pieces more manageable (figure C).
- Use a pry bar and hammer to remove the old backsplash (figure D).
- Pry up the sink with a small pry bar. You may want to clip it from underneath.
Note: If you're tossing the sink, just disconnect it and remove with the counter.
In the next segment, Ryan and the homeowners tackle the removal of the vinyl floor and the wallpaper.
