This high-quality kitchen makeover came at a price -- approximately $20,000 -- but by doing a lot of the work themselves, the homeowners saved around $5,000!
    Final Touches

    1. In old houses it's common to find electrical wires in walls with no boxes, so it's important in this case to install a remodeling box (figure A).

    2. With the new remodeling box the new period light fixture can be installed (figure B).

    3. In keeping with the era, the homeowners decided to install reproduction push-button switches. But the one they chose had a built-in modern touch -- a dimmer!

    4. To seal the soapstone countertops, use regular mineral oil and a lint-free cloth. Pour mineral oil on the countertop, rub in with a cloth and wipe off the excess. Mineral oil will bring out the natural beauty of the soapstone countertops (figure C).

    5. For the crowning final touches, the appliances. First, make sure you have enough help in bringing them in. Note that using a dolly can make heavy work easy.

    6. Measure the doors to see if they need to come off before the appliances are brought in.

    7. Once of the most unique appliances that the homeowners went with was an exact-replica cookstove (figure D) from the firewood days. The couple decided to go with a company that makes modern appliances look like they came from the old days (for more information on the appliances, see Resources, below).
