In this episode of Kitchen Renovations, host Paul Ryan converts this personality-free, plain kitchen...
|
| |

that was low on counter space ...
|
| |

into a beautiful new Tuscan-style kitchen!
|
| |

Faux painting did the trick when it comes to creating that "old-world" feel.
|
| |

The new limestone countertop was a perfect match for the new kitchen, ...
|
| |

and the tumble-tile backsplash added just the right amount of flair.
|
| |

Even the old and new appliances looked right at home after the remodeling.
|
| |

This 48-hour Tuscan renovation project gave the homeowners that touch of Italy they were going for!
|
|
In this segment, host Paul Ryan and the homeowners attach the cabinet doors. The homeowners install appliance panels that they painted with a faux finish, which gives them a built-in look. Ryan grouts the backsplash tile, and the new professional range is brought in.Materials and Tools: Texturing Wall-- bucket water dry bag of joint compound 4" putty knife drop cloths drill with a mixing bit Prepping Doors for Faux Painting-- safety glasses masks saw horses drill appropriate screw head bit orbital palm sander tack cloth Adding Decorative Wood Details-- safety glasses gloves hot glue gun glue sticks decorative wood pieces work surface framing square tape measure Painting Walls (Base Coat)-- drop cloths painter's tape paint tray tray liners rollers brushes primer and paint Faux Painting Doors-- selected paints and primer flotrol drop cloth saw horses long boards newspaper box of rags plastic containers for leftover paints Installing the Limestone Countertop-- countertop a couple of helpers gloves shims epoxy tint small putty knife razor blade box of rags Cutting Out the Sink Hole-- safety glasses mask diamond blade angle grinder large C-clamps vacuum rags silicones caulk guns Tiling the Backsplash-- work paper or drop cloth tape V-notched trowel tile mastic bucket of water small 1" trowel spacers (if needed) Putting Hardward on the Newly Painted Doors-- new glass knobs old hinges and screws safety glasses cordless drill appropriate screw head bit Adding Faux Painted Panels and Kits to Appliance Doors-- safety glasses drill appropriate screw head bit panels frames/kits directions included in kit Grouting Backsplash-- tape bucket of water bag of grout sponge box of rags drop clothes rubber grout float Installing the Old Sink-- old sink 4 wooden blocks caulk gun silicone Distressing the Desk and Center Island Unit-- safety glasses drill appropriate screw head bit new hardware corbels box of rags stain brush Installing the Old Desk and Center Island-- desk Limestone counter top silicone caulk gun
Installing Cabinet Doors and Drawers- Put on new knobs using existing holes.
- Reattach old hinges using old screws and existing holes.
- Now attach doors to the cabinet boxes. This job goes much smoother with two people, one to hold door up and one to screw doors up with cordless drill (figure A).
Adding Painted Panel Kits to the Appliances- Faux paint panels (figure B) to match the cabinet doors.
- Remove the refrigerator doors and follow the directions provided with the kit to attach the faux painted panels.
- Attach the kit frames.
- Reattach the refrigerator doors.
- Do the same with the dishwasher.
Distressing the Center Island- Remove the knobs.
- Distress the exterior surface of the desk by sanding off the finish and beating it with a piece a old chain.
- Add corbels (figure C) to the backside of the desk where the limestone top will have a larger overhang.
- Give the entire piece a hand-rubbed, worn-look finish by brushing on a darker stain and rubbing it in with a rag. Add more in some places to give the desk a varied finish.
- Let dry.

Plantation shutters were a perfect touch to this Tuscan-inspired kitchen.

Installing the Island Countertop- Bring in the countertop and lay it on desktop.
- Center the top over entire piece including the area of overhang where corbels were added (figure D).
- Use silicone to secure the limestone to the desktop.
- Wipe the top and apply a sealer with a clean lint-free rag.
The total cost for materials for this 48-hour makeover came to approximately $9,000, but the homeowners saved close to $3,000 by doing it themselves!
