| 48-Hour Tuscan: Installing the Counter and Backsplash |
From "Kitchen Renovations" episode DKTN-201 |
|
|
 |

In this episode of Kitchen Renovations, host Paul Ryan converts this personality-free, plain kitchen...
|
| |

that was low on counter space ...
|
| |

into a beautiful new Tuscan-style kitchen!
|
| |

Faux painting did the trick when it comes to creating that "old-world" feel.
|
| |

The new limestone countertop was a perfect match for the new kitchen, ...
|
| |

and the tumble-tile backsplash added just the right amount of flair.
|
| |

Even the old and new appliances looked right at home after the remodeling.
|
| |

This 48-hour Tuscan renovation project gave the homeowners that touch of Italy they were going for!
|
|
In this segment, host Paul Ryan and the fabricators install the limestone countertop, cut the hole for the sink, use a two-step epoxy on the seams and apply the sealer. And the old-world porcelain tile for the backsplash is installed.Materials and Tools: Texturing Wall-- bucket water dry bag of joint compound 4" putty knife drop cloths drill with a mixing bit Prepping Doors for Faux Painting-- safety glasses masks saw horses drill appropriate screw head bit orbital palm sander tack cloth Adding Decorative Wood Details-- safety glasses gloves hot glue gun glue sticks decorative wood pieces work surface framing square tape measure Painting Walls (Base Coat)-- drop cloths painter's tape paint tray tray liners rollers brushes primer and paint Faux Painting Doors-- selected paints and primer flotrol drop cloth saw horses long boards newspaper box of rags plastic containers for leftover paints Installing the Limestone Countertop-- countertop a couple of helpers gloves shims epoxy tint small putty knife razor blade box of rags Cutting Out the Sink Hole-- safety glasses mask diamond blade angle grinder large C-clamps vacuum rags silicones caulk guns Tiling the Backsplash-- work paper or drop cloth tape V-notched trowel tile mastic bucket of water small 1" trowel spacers (if needed) Putting Hardward on the Newly Painted Doors-- new glass knobs old hinges and screws safety glasses cordless drill appropriate screw head bit Adding Faux Painted Panels and Kits to Appliance Doors-- safety glasses drill appropriate screw head bit panels frames/kits directions included in kit Grouting Backsplash-- tape bucket of water bag of grout sponge box of rags drop clothes rubber grout float Installing the Old Sink-- old sink 4 wooden blocks caulk gun silicone Distressing the Desk and Center Island Unit-- safety glasses drill appropriate screw head bit new hardware corbels box of rags stain brush Installing the Old Desk and Center Island-- desk Limestone counter top silicone caulk gun
Installing the Limestone CountertopsNote: Make sure you have helpers when lifting the heavy countertops. According the size of the slab, limestone can weigh 200 pounds or more. - Lay pieces in for a dry fit (figure A).
- Make sure two sections are level at the joint. Shim if necessary until level.
- Prep the seam for the epoxy. Tape off joining edges of the countertop.
- Fill the gap with epoxy. First you will need to mix the two-part epoxy. Then add the appropriate tint (to match the countertop) and the hardener. Fill the gap (figure B) quickly as epoxy firms up fast.
- Push the slabs together.
- Clean up any excess that squishes out with a straightedge scraper or a razor blade. Use de-natured alcohol and a rag if you do happen to get any epoxy on the actual countertop.
Cutting the Hole for the Sink- First clamp in the wooden blocks under the marked cutout. Put the clamps through the starter holes to prevent it from dropping once perimeter is cut all the way through.
Note: The initial starter holes were cut out and the perimeter was scored (cut partially through) at the fabricator using the template from the sink. - Using a diamond blade angle grinder (figure C), follow the score and cut the rest of the way through. Have a helper vacuum the dust as you go. This will make it easier to see the outline and make a precise cut.
- Remove clamps and lift out cutout.
- Clean up the dust and wipe down the countertops.
- Apply sealer by wiping it on with a clean lint-free rag (figure D).
- Secure the countertop to the base with a bead of silicone.
Tiling the BacksplashNote: The backsplash tile (figure E) that the homeowners chose looks a lot like the limestone countertops, but actually it's porcelain tile. - Prep the area by covering the countertop with work paper.
- Tape off the back edge of the countertop.
- Lay out tiles to see how they will fit, and make adjustments to make sure you have the most "whole" tiles possible.
- Using a v-notched trowel tipped at a 30-degree angle (figure F), apply mastic to the bottom area of backsplash.
Tip: Start at the bottom and work your way up because sometimes the weight of the tiles make them slide downward. Be neat and wipe off excess mastic from tile fronts as you go. - Put up the border tile by back buttering each piece. Do this by actually buttering/applying the mastic onto the back of each tile and then put the tile on the wall.
- Allow the mastic to dry before grouting.
Grouting the Backsplash- Tape above and around the edges of the tile, and mix the grout according to the directions on package of selected grout.
Note: Make sure the countertops are protected. - Using a rubber grout float at a 30-degree angle, float or push the grout into the gaps (figure G).
- Wipe the grout off with a damp clean sponge, rinsing after each pass in a clean bucket of water. Wipe until the tiles are clean and the grout lines are even.
