  • From "Kitchen Renovations"
    episode DKTN-201

    PHOTO

In this episode of Kitchen Renovations, host Paul Ryan converts this personality-free, plain kitchen...
    PHOTO

that was low on counter space ...
    PHOTO

into a beautiful new Tuscan-style kitchen!
    PHOTO

Faux painting did the trick when it comes to creating that "old-world" feel.
    PHOTO

The new limestone countertop was a perfect match for the new kitchen, ...
    PHOTO

and the tumble-tile backsplash added just the right amount of flair.
    PHOTO

Even the old and new appliances looked right at home after the remodeling.
    PHOTO

This 48-hour Tuscan renovation project gave the homeowners that touch of Italy they were going for!

    Installing the Limestone Countertops

Note: Make sure you have helpers when lifting the heavy countertops. According the size of the slab, limestone can weigh 200 pounds or more.

    1. Lay pieces in for a dry fit (figure A).

    2. Make sure two sections are level at the joint. Shim if necessary until level.

    3. Prep the seam for the epoxy. Tape off joining edges of the countertop.

    4. Fill the gap with epoxy. First you will need to mix the two-part epoxy. Then add the appropriate tint (to match the countertop) and the hardener. Fill the gap (figure B) quickly as epoxy firms up fast.

    5. Push the slabs together.

    6. Clean up any excess that squishes out with a straightedge scraper or a razor blade. Use de-natured alcohol and a rag if you do happen to get any epoxy on the actual countertop.

Cutting the Hole for the Sink

    1. First clamp in the wooden blocks under the marked cutout. Put the clamps through the starter holes to prevent it from dropping once perimeter is cut all the way through.

Note: The initial starter holes were cut out and the perimeter was scored (cut partially through) at the fabricator using the template from the sink.

    2. Using a diamond blade angle grinder (figure C), follow the score and cut the rest of the way through. Have a helper vacuum the dust as you go. This will make it easier to see the outline and make a precise cut.

    3. Remove clamps and lift out cutout.

    4. Clean up the dust and wipe down the countertops.

    5. Apply sealer by wiping it on with a clean lint-free rag (figure D).

    6. Secure the countertop to the base with a bead of silicone.

    Tiling the Backsplash

Note: The backsplash tile (figure E) that the homeowners chose looks a lot like the limestone countertops, but actually it's porcelain tile.

    1. Prep the area by covering the countertop with work paper.

    2. Tape off the back edge of the countertop.

    3. Lay out tiles to see how they will fit, and make adjustments to make sure you have the most "whole" tiles possible.

    4. Using a v-notched trowel tipped at a 30-degree angle (figure F), apply mastic to the bottom area of backsplash.

Tip: Start at the bottom and work your way up because sometimes the weight of the tiles make them slide downward. Be neat and wipe off excess mastic from tile fronts as you go.

    5. Put up the border tile by back buttering each piece. Do this by actually buttering/applying the mastic onto the back of each tile and then put the tile on the wall.

    6. Allow the mastic to dry before grouting.

    Grouting the Backsplash

    1. Tape above and around the edges of the tile, and mix the grout according to the directions on package of selected grout.

Note: Make sure the countertops are protected.

    2. Using a rubber grout float at a 30-degree angle, float or push the grout into the gaps (figure G).

    3. Wipe the grout off with a damp clean sponge, rinsing after each pass in a clean bucket of water. Wipe until the tiles are clean and the grout lines are even.
