and the tumble-tile backsplash added just the right amount of flair.

    Figure A
    Cabinet Face-lift

    1. Prepare the doors by first marking them so you'll know where they go.

    2. Remove all the hardware and save the hinges and screws.

    3. Create a workspace where you can lay out all the doors.

    4. Using an orbital palm sander (figure A), sand front of doors to remove the finish.

    5. Wipe off the doors with a tack cloth.

Adding Decorative Details to the Doors

    1. Visually decide where you would like the decorative pieces (figure B) to go.

    2. Measure the doors and the transfer the measurements to the rest of the doors for consistency. You measure because you want the overlays to be properly aligned.

    3. Using a jet-melt glue gun apply the pieces to the doors (figure C).

Safety Alert: Be sure to wear gloves because the glue is extremely hot!

Tip: Move quickly because the glue dries quickly.

    Figure E
    Painting the Base Wall Coat

    1. Prepare the area with drop cloths and tape.

    2. Mix the base coat -- 1/2 primer and 1/2 selected base color (figure D).

    3. Use a brush to cut in ceiling and edges.

    4. Use a roller to paint large areas.

    5. Allow time to dry.

    6. Apply the second color by mixing 1/2 Flotrol and 1/2 of the second color (burnt umber).

Note: Flotrol is a paint medium that keeps paint fluid and prevents brush marks. It dilutes the color but gives the strength of the paint, along with a glaze effect.

    7. Brush on and be sure to get into all the ridges.

    8. Wipe off with a rag, leaving more in cracks and crevices.

    9. Apply the third color/highlight.

    10. Dry brush on the highlight color.

    11. Dip the brush then wipe off majority of paint on a piece of newspaper.

    12. Brush lightly on the texture (figure E), which will add highlights to the surface.

    9. Mix 1/2 Flotrol and 1/2 selected color (burnt umber).

    10. Brush on liberally and be sure to get into the ridges (figure F).

    11. Wipe off with a rag, leaving paint in the grooves and crevices.

    12. Allow time to dry.

    13. Apply the final highlight coat by selecting the top coat highlight color and use the dry brush technique that was utilized earlier.

    14. Apply the paint to the brush and wipe off the majority on a piece of newspaper.

    15. Apply to the door -- brushing with the grain of wood.

    16. Allow time to dry.
