In this episode of Kitchen Renovations, host Paul Ryan converts this personality-free, plain kitchen...
|
| |

that was low on counter space ...
|
| |

into a beautiful new Tuscan-style kitchen!
|
| |

Faux painting did the trick when it comes to creating that "old-world" feel.
|
| |

The new limestone countertop was a perfect match for the new kitchen, ...
|
| |

and the tumble-tile backsplash added just the right amount of flair.
|
| |

Even the old and new appliances looked right at home after the remodeling.

In this segment the hardware from the cabinet doors is removed so they can be sanded. Embossed overlays are attached to the doors with a glue gun. A decorative artist demonstrates easy-to-do faux painting for the cabinets.Materials and Tools: Texturing Wall-- bucket water dry bag of joint compound 4" putty knife drop cloths drill with a mixing bit Prepping Doors for Faux Painting-- safety glasses masks saw horses drill appropriate screw head bit orbital palm sander tack cloth Adding Decorative Wood Details-- safety glasses gloves hot glue gun glue sticks decorative wood pieces work surface framing square tape measure Painting Walls (Base Coat)-- drop cloths painter's tape paint tray tray liners rollers brushes primer and paint Faux Painting Doors-- selected paints and primer flotrol drop cloth saw horses long boards newspaper box of rags plastic containers for leftover paints Installing the Limestone Countertop-- countertop a couple of helpers gloves shims epoxy tint small putty knife razor blade box of rags Cutting Out the Sink Hole-- safety glasses mask diamond blade angle grinder large C-clamps vacuum rags silicones caulk guns Tiling the Backsplash-- work paper or drop cloth tape V-notched trowel tile mastic bucket of water small 1" trowel spacers (if needed) Putting Hardward on the Newly Painted Doors-- new glass knobs old hinges and screws safety glasses cordless drill appropriate screw head bit Adding Faux Painted Panels and Kits to Appliance Doors-- safety glasses drill appropriate screw head bit panels frames/kits directions included in kit Grouting Backsplash-- tape bucket of water bag of grout sponge box of rags drop clothes rubber grout float Installing the Old Sink-- old sink 4 wooden blocks caulk gun silicone Distressing the Desk and Center Island Unit-- safety glasses drill appropriate screw head bit new hardware corbels box of rags stain brush Installing the Old Desk and Center Island-- desk Limestone counter top silicone caulk gun
Cabinet Face-lift- Prepare the doors by first marking them so you'll know where they go.
- Remove all the hardware and save the hinges and screws.
- Create a workspace where you can lay out all the doors.
- Using an orbital palm sander (figure A), sand front of doors to remove the finish.
- Wipe off the doors with a tack cloth.
Adding Decorative Details to the Doors- Visually decide where you would like the decorative pieces (figure B) to go.
- Measure the doors and the transfer the measurements to the rest of the doors for consistency. You measure because you want the overlays to be properly aligned.
- Using a jet-melt glue gun apply the pieces to the doors (figure C).
Safety Alert: Be sure to wear gloves because the glue is extremely hot! Tip: Move quickly because the glue dries quickly.
Painting the Base Wall Coat- Prepare the area with drop cloths and tape.
- Mix the base coat -- 1/2 primer and 1/2 selected base color (figure D).
- Use a brush to cut in ceiling and edges.
- Use a roller to paint large areas.
- Allow time to dry.
- Apply the second color by mixing 1/2 Flotrol and 1/2 of the second color (burnt umber).
Note: Flotrol is a paint medium that keeps paint fluid and prevents brush marks. It dilutes the color but gives the strength of the paint, along with a glaze effect. - Brush on and be sure to get into all the ridges.
- Wipe off with a rag, leaving more in cracks and crevices.
- Apply the third color/highlight.
- Dry brush on the highlight color.
- Dip the brush then wipe off majority of paint on a piece of newspaper.
- Brush lightly on the texture (figure E), which will add highlights to the surface.
Faux Painting the Cabinet Doors and Boxes- Apply the base coat.
- Mix 1/2 primer/sealer and 1/2 base color.
- Brush on.
- Let dry.
- Apply second coat
- Brush on the base coat and be sure to follow the grain.
- Let dry.
- Apply the third coat
- Mix 1/2 Flotrol and 1/2 selected color (burnt umber).
- Brush on liberally and be sure to get into the ridges (figure F).
- Wipe off with a rag, leaving paint in the grooves and crevices.
- Allow time to dry.
- Apply the final highlight coat by selecting the top coat highlight color and use the dry brush technique that was utilized earlier.
- Apply the paint to the brush and wipe off the majority on a piece of newspaper.
- Apply to the door -- brushing with the grain of wood.
- Allow time to dry.
