    In this segment we meet the homeowners, Jill and Chris, and outline a plan for the new Tuscan style. The kitchen is emptied, and a decorative artist shares tips on a plaster technique for the walls to give them an aged stucco appearance.

    1. Clear out old items from the kitchen, being careful with anything that will be put back. For example, the sink for this particular project was coming back.

      Plaster Technique on Walls (figure A)

    2. Prepare the area by putting down drop cloths and taping.

    3. Mix the light-weight joint compound and water according to instructions on the bag.

    4. Apply small amounts of mud to the wall using a 4" or 5" putty knife.

    5. Using a trowel, spread the compound in even passes with smooth, steady strokes. Make sure the pattern is random (figure B).

    6. Continue over the entire wall, overlapping slightly.

    7. Allow time to dry completely.
