    episode WDC-208

    (Continued from page 1)

Some of the decorator touches added include the following:

    • Knobs are installed on the cabinet doors, instead of pulls. Golden believes they take up less presence on the raised door panels. There is no hard and fast rule when it comes to installing the hardware on the cabinet doors. Golden likes to install the hardware in the middle of the miter joint on the raised panel (figure E).

    • The sink is stainless steel, so to continue the theme a brushed-pewter chandelier is hung in the breakfast nook (figure F).

    • A rug is added to the kitchen area (figure G).

Tip: Use thicker rugs in high-traffic areas.

    • A bulletin board is hung as a spot to coordinate family activities (figure H).

    • Since the look here has a nostalgic touch, old-fashioned appliances are added, all with a chrome finish reminiscent of long-ago diners and luncheonettes. They include a drink mixer and a blender anchored with a small black bookshelf to hold treasured cookbooks.

Tip: To avoid kitchen clutter, leave only necessary or decorative objects on the counter.

    • Knives and a basket of utensils are put in a handy place by the stove.

    • A spice rack, a towel rack, a decorative basket and a modern but vintage-looking phone complete the look (figure I).

    • Embroidered curtains are hung in the breakfast nook.

    • A glass table with a 42" round top is placed in the nook. The glass appears to float in the space, giving an open and airy look to the area (figure J).

    • Shelves are hung to display decorative serving plates (figure K)

    • And finally, a baker's rack is added to the nook (figure L). Both pretty and functional, it holds dishes in a black-and-white theme as well as decorative accessories (figure M).

The result is a kitchen that blends elements of modern and traditional styles. It uses both rich woods and shiny metals to bring a retro, clean and edgy feel to the space.
