Attaching the Side Panels to the Cabinets

    1. Put the panel into place making sure the front edge is flush with adjacent cabinet and clamp into place.

    2. Attach to the side of the cabinet using 1-1/4" screws (figure A).

      Installing the Upper Refrigerator Cabinet

    3. Raise the cabinet into place using T-Jaks (figure B). Raise slowly until the top is level with the panel and cabinet on either side.

Note: T-Jaks cost approximately $80 each, but they also can be rented at many hardware rental centers.

    4. Clamp into place and attach with screws to both the panel and cabinet.

    5. Now anchor the cabinet into the back wall using 3" panhead screws.

      Making Template for the Countertops

Note:Making a template is a two-step project that isn't necessarily a do-it-yourself project because the manufacturer has to prepare the stone from the template.

    6. To make a template you can use cardboard or craft paper, but for this particular project Ryan and the homeowners chose to use wooden strips (luan figure C) because of the quartz stone being used for the countertop.

    7. Cut the luan into long 3" wide strips and lay them around the perimeter of the cabinet tops and dishwasher gap, creating an outline of where the new stone countertop will go.

    8. To make the template, first determine the desired overhang measurement. Measure the length and depth of the desired countertops and cut the strips to length using a cordless circular saw.

    9. Using a hot-glue gun, glue the strips in place.

    10. Send the template (figure D) off to the fabricator.

In the final segment of Pt. 2 of DIY's "Soft Contemporary" kitchen renovation, Ryan and the homeowners install the cabinets that will sit on top of a counter, and the wine rack and frosted doors are installed.
