    Patching the Wall

    1. Measure and cut the pieces of 1/2" drywall to fit the hole (figure A).

    2. Screw into place using 1-5/8" drywall screws.

    3. Tape the joints using self-adhesive fiberglass tape (figure B).

    4. Apply a first coat of joint compound/mud and allow to dry.

Note: Apply additional coats if necessary.

    5. Once they dry, sand and smooth.

Prepping the Underlayment for Cork Flooring

    6. The underlayment surface needs to be as smooth as possible. Any imperfections (figure C) will transfer through and be very noticeable once cork is down and sealed.

    7. With a 6" putty knife, apply a thin layer of thin set to all seams and low spots in the floor and let dry.

    8. Once dry, sand the seams smooth using a belt sander with a medium grit sanding belt (figure D). Make sure to sand with the grain of the underlayment.

      Note:Don't over sand.

    9. Now you're ready to install the base cabinets and the cork flooring.

      Cabinet Arrival

    10. Inventory the pieces using the order sheet as a reference.

    11. Also be sure to check for any damage. Now is the time while there is still time to reorder if necessary.

    12. You may want to actually bring the cabinets in and do a test layout (figure E).

In Pt. 2 of the "Soft Contemporary" kitchen renovation, Ryan and the homeowners install the new maple cabinets, and a professional is brought in to help measure for the new engineered quartz countertops.
