Starting the Demolition- Clear off the countertops and inside the cabinets.
- Remove the countertop using a small pry bar.
Note: Old cabinets make excellent storage in your workshop, and if you don't want your old appliances, be sure to donate them to charity.
- Remove the center island (figure A), which will make for more space for the rest of the demolition.
Appliance Removal
- Get an appliance dolly (figure B)and some extra help to remove the appliances.
Note: Make sure to unhook the water lines to both the refrigerator and dishwasher before pulling them out. Also check to see if the dishwasher is just plugged in or hardwired. If it's hardwired be sure to turn off the power to the circuit before unhooking.
Tip: If you have a screw that's hard to remove because of a bad angle, consider purchasing an offset power head (figure C) for approximately $10.
- Taking the countertop out before the dishwasher is removed makes the task much easier.
In the next segment, Ryan and the crew will continue the demolition and removal process.
