After the first couple of days of renovation, Ryan shows off the new flooring and the not-quite-finished reconfigured cabinets.

    1. To remove the section of upper cabinets, start by lining up the top with the edge of the lower cabinet, using a 6' level (figure A).

    2. The 2" stile is going to be moved over to reframe the new cabinet. Transfer the 2" mark and then use a speed square (figure B) to draw the line.

    3. Cut through the top and bottom frames with a Japanese pull saw.

    4. Make the vertical cut along the stile through the face frame.

    5. Cut through the stile horizontally along the top (figure C).

    6. Cut straight back through the bottom of cabinet to the back wall, using a reciprocating saw.

    7. Remove the excess pieces of shelving.

    8. Remove the old side piece and move over.

    9. Set the shelf edge into the dado groove (figure D) on the old side panel, and nail into place using impulse finish nailer.

    10. Now it's time to prep and paint the new cabinet doors and drawer fronts. Create a work-and-painting area by laying out a drop cloth and setting up sawhorses and two long boards.

Safety Alert: Make sure the area is dry and well ventilated.

    11. With fine sandpaper, lightly sand the surfaces of the new doors and drawer fronts.

    12. Wipe off the sanded surfaces with a tack cloth to remove excess dust.

    13. Paint surfaces (front and back) with oil-based primer -- brush with grain of wood.

    14. The final step in this first episode is to lay down the rest of the pine hardwood flooring.

In the next episode, Ryan and the homeowners update the walls with new beadboard plywood. Also, an imported fire clay, apron-front sink is installed and with a few details, the old cabinets are turned into furniture.
