- First, you'll need to lay some drop cloths down in order to protect the new flooring.
- Disconnect the plumbing and then remove the old sink.
- To remove the large counters around the sink in half, use a reciprocating saw, being careful not to cut into the face frame (figure A).
- Find the weak spots and pry out the countertops, being careful of older nails poking through in older counters.
Reconfiguring the Cabinets
- Remove a section of the base cabinets by carefully cutting the rail along the top and bottom stile using a Japanese pull saw (figure B).
- Use a reciprocating saw to cut through the back frame.
- Pry off the side of the cabinet.
In the final segment of Pt. 1 of this "Country Cottage" kitchen renovation, Ryan, the contractor and the homeowners will finish rebuilding the cabinets, start painting the new cabinet doors and complete the floor installation.
