    into an eye-catching contemporary beauty!
In this second segment of Pt. 3 of the "Contemporary" kitchen, host Paul Ryan shows the homeowners how to get the cabinets plumb and level. The contractor, Shane Kretsinger, shows how to compensate for irregularities in the wall and how to attach the cabinets to the wall and to each other.

    Cabinets Installation

    1. Remove cabinet doors to make it easier to attach cabinets to each other, and label the doors with tape.

Tip: Install the upper cabinets first so you don't have to lean across lower cabinets when installing unless you have intricate lower-cabinet installation.

    2. Start from the corner cabinet and make sure it is plumb and level. Hold the cabinet in position and slide a couple of shims under the bottom. Hold a level on top to check.

    3. Pre-drill pilot holes through the back and the cleats (figure A) and into the studs.

    4. Secure the unit with 2" panhead wood screws that come with the cabinets. Use an impact driver.

    5. Line up the rest of the cabinets with the plumb-and-level corner cabinet.

    6. Screw the cabinets through their face frames together by using stainless-steel deck screws.

Note: Installing the upper cabinets (also knows as "uppers") is a two-person job.

    7. Lift the first unit roughly into place. One person holds while the other clamps face frames together (figure B).

    8. Make adjustments with a rubber mallet until the top of the units are flush, and use a 4' level to double-check.

    9. While one person supports the weight of the cabinet, the other will screw through the rear cleats into the studs marked on the wall with a few screws on top and bottom (figure C).

    10. To secure the cabinets together even further, drill pilot holes 1 to 2" from the top of the corner cabinet, and the other pilot hole 2" from the bottom of the corner cabinet. Then countersink the pilot hole to hide the head of the screw. Use a 1/4" bit with tape around it to show how deep to drill (figure D). Run the screws (2" stainless deck screws with square drive) in.

    11. These cabinets will surround the new refrigerator, so in order to cushion the end cabinet from the refrigerator, Ryan and the homeowners decided to add a decorative end panel (figure E).

Note: Use a spacer block between the side panels to diminish wiggling and to create a more solid end panel. Attach with a power nailer. Attach it the same way as the other cabinets.

In the next segment, Ryan and the homeowners will install the rest of the cabinets and show you how to build a box beam.
