With the cabinets and countertops in place, it's time to work on the backsplash. Chris and Lexi have an idea that will make a unique statement in the kitchen: hand-painted tile created by family members (figure A) mixed with solid ceramic tile.
After selecting the tiles and deciding on a pattern, the two are ready to get started with some help from co-host Amy Devers.- Because the two want to grout the tile as quickly as possible, Devers advises the two to use a fast-drying mortar to adhere the tiles to the wall board. Small amounts of mortar is applied with a notched trowel as a few tiles are positioned on the wall. A scoring cutter is used to cut tiles down to the proper size as needed.
- After all tiles are set and the mortar has dried, the two move on to the grout application. Wife Lexi uses a rubber float to apply the grout (figure B), while husband Chris removes excess and smooths the grout surface with a wet sponge to ensure uniformity (figure C).
- "Forceful Orange" paint is applied, along with pale mint trim. Lexi chose the color because it made her feel "happy". While paint is in progress, Nathan Haun is busy building a gift for the Scotts: a wine rack.
- The old appliances--including the oven the with missing door handle and unbalanced refrigerator and dishwasher--have disappeared. Clean, white appliances brighten the kitchen, and a new outside door, moldings and contemporary lighting provide a much needed update. The result of this rescue? Newlyweds that look more like lovebirds and less like kitchen adversaries! Another successful rescue for the crew!
