    Installing Tile Backsplash

    • Measure from top of counter to bottom of cabinet and plan your tile layout (figure A).

    • Measure how much of end tiles will need to be cut off to exactly fit the space. Cut tiles to size using Rubi cutter (figure B). Set stop to the correct width, put cutting blade down and cut tile with one smooth motion. Pull down the handle to snap tile.

    • Polish cut edges with a grinding stone.

    • Attach temporary batten board to wall to extend tile line across the gap where the stove sits.

    • Mix the mortar according to package directions. Add mortar to water a little at a time while stirring (should be about the consistency of creamy peanut butter).

    • Wait about 10 minutes after mortar is mixed to let it slake or set.

    • Apply thinset to wall with a 3/16-inch notched trowel to ensure proper depth (figure C). Apply thinset in smooth, even strokes.

    • Thinset will stay workable for about 45 minutes, but don’t apply too much at a time.
    • Cover about a 2-square-foot area at a time.

    • Keep a sponge and water handy for cleaning as you go.

    • Apply tiles to thinset. Press and wiggle each tile to set into the mortar.

    • Use 1/8-inch spacers to keep a consistent space between tiles as you go. Pull them out later when the mortar starts to dry.

    • After first two rows add accent tiles or liner bars (figure D).

    • Keep an eye on vertical and horizontal lines.

    • Use a wet saw to make compound cuts in tiles and fit them around electrical outlets.

    • Apply unsanded grout after mortar sets for the recommended amount of time. Use unsanded grout to avoid scratching tiles.

    • Glide the float over tiles at a 45-degree angle (figure E). Don’t apply too much pressure.

    • Wipe tile clean with a sponge. By the time you get to the end the first section should be dry enough.

    • Run sponge at 45-degree angle over tile, not right angle, or you will pull grout out of seams.

    • Polish haze off tiles with a soft cloth.
