    Figure D

In this debut episode of DIY's new series--Kitchen Renovations--host Paul Ryan helps homeowners Kirsten and Clint convert their old kitchen into a new, exciting '50s retro kitchen.

The renovation will take 48 hours, and here's the plan:

    • New laminate on the cabinets with new hardware.

    • New laminate countertop with metal (red) edging.

    • Paint a new backsplash behind the sink.

    • All new stainless steel appliances.

    • The cost to take the kitchen back to the '50s should be less than $10,000 approximately, but the couple will save about $3,500 by doing the work themselves.

With only 48 hours to get the job done, it's time to get started!

    Materials and Tools:

    appliance dolly
    drill
    pry bar
    masking tape for labeling cabinets
    nut driver or screwdriver
    eye protection
    wrench
    reciprocating saw
    respirator
    pre-cut laminate
palm or belt sander (with 60 grit pads)
    tack cloth
    spray adhesive
    dowels
    rolling pin
plastic to protect areas not being painted
    primer, sander and bondo
protective gear (goggles, gloves, respirator and protective suit)
    latex-based metallic paint
    high-volume low-pressure sprayer
    clear coat sealer

    Clearing the Kitchen

    1. First, you'll need to clear out the kitchen. Move out the appliance with an appliance dolly. Detach the cabinet doors and label them (figure A) for easier assembly later.

      Removing the Sink

    2. Remember to turn off the water!

    3. If you're unsure of how to unhook your supply lines, drain lines and garbage disposal, call a plumber.

    4. On drop-in sinks you can use a nut driver or screwdriver (figure B) to take out retaining clips (if they are rusted, gently break them off).

Safety Alert: When working on your back it's best to wear eye protection. Wearing gloves, pull out the retaining ring (figure C) and then pull out the sink.

      Removing the Countertop

    5. Use a reciprocating saw to cut through the counter (figure D). Don't cut through the cabinet base frame underneath because you will need it to support the new counter.

    6. Pull off the rest of the countertops.
