    Repairing Sink Drywall

    Home inspector Tim Hockenberry shows homeowner Lisa Marsden how to do a simple drywall repair around the plumbing pipes under her master bathroom sink; the repair will prevent mice from entering her bath and bedroom. Fellow home inspectors Wally Conway and Rick Yerger join Tim Hockenberry to offer tips on critterproofing a home.

    Materials:

    measuring tape
    utility knife
    drywall
    drywall tape
    joint compound
    fine-grit sandpaper

    1. Cut a 5"x5" square in the drywall around the plumbing.

    2. Cut a 5"x5" section of drywall. Leave 1" of extra paper on all sides for easy installation.

    3. Apply drywall tape around the edges; seal with joint compound to hold the patch in place and give a smooth, seamless appearance.

    4. Make sure that the small spaces around the drainpipe and the supply line are taped and covered with mud as well.

    5. Once the drywall is dry, sand it smooth. Apply additional coats as needed.
