In this segment, concrete tiles are installed on the roof. The counter-batten system installed earlier helps make this portion of the job easier.
Basic Tools:concrete tiles safety harness and anchor hammer diamond blade circular saw caulk After a subcontractor sets the tiles on the roof (figure A), Bobby begins installing the tiles from the bottom up. On the bottom side of each tile is a small lip that allows the tile to hang upon the horizontal bats. Each tile also has a side lip so that the tiles can overlap with each other. This lip forces Bobby to install the tile moving in one direction. As Bobby lays each tile, he hammers two nails through prefabricated holes in the tiles and into wood bats (figure B). For drainage and aesthetic reasons, Bobby staggers the placement of the tile seams from row to row (figure C). To minimize tile breakage, Bobby makes sure to only walk on the high side of the tiles where they sit on the wood lathes underneath.
When reaching areas such as a hip, the last tile in the row needs to be cut to shape (figure D). For these, Bobby and Jeff measure the vertical and horizontal dimensions of the gap. On the ground, Bobby transfers the dimensions onto a whole tile and cuts it using a diamond blade circular saw (figure E). If he happens to saw off one of the prefabricated nail holes, Bobby remedies this by cutting a small groove in the tile (figure F).
