  • Staining Grout /Finishing Touches
  • From "DIY to the Rescue"
    episode DTTR-208

One of the problems with the Ehlers' kitchen -- and one encountered by many homeowners -- is the discolored tile grout on the kitchen countertops. Host Amy Devers teaches the Ehlers how to mask discolorations by using a grout stain.

    Materials:

    grout stain
    scrub brushes
    soap
    bleach
    sponges
    gloves
    goggles

    1. Use bleach and soap to remove any grease or oil on the existing grout surface. An old toothbrush is the perfect tool for getting into the grout.

    2. Once the grout is clean and dry, paint the grout-stain onto the grout lines with a thin paint brush. Try to stay within the grout lines. Allow the stain to stand for 20 minutes.

    3. After 20-minutes use a sponge to wet the tiles. Allow the water to stand on the tiles for about 5 minutes.

    4. Use a scrub pad and remove the stain on the tile, within concentrating on the grout lines (where you want the stain to stay).

    5. Go over the tiles with a towel and clean up grout lines.

With the new grout stain in place, the kitchen is almost complete. The crew hangs the painted scallop created by carpenter Nathan Haun to hide the old lighting near the window. The addition of new blinds, paint and pantry doors completes the kitchen update.
