Tuesday, April 29, 2003 Another sunny, hot day. Today the temperature was over 85 degrees. Hard to believe for the many people who were working tirelessly on the roof. The shingles were put on as well as the installation of the windows. The house was also prepped for the siding to be put on. Our home is really coming together quickly with the help of all the volunteers. As always, the Americorps personnel are so patient and knowledgeable. Today volunteers from Queen's College and Elogex came out to help, and they were wonderful. Their spirit, positive attitude and HARD work is much appreciated. Wednesday, April 30, 2003 Today we started on the siding. I agonized (for an hour) over which color to choose weeks ago. It was between gray and silver (I ended up with silver). It looks great! I am really happy with my choice. It was another hot and sunny day, so plenty of water and sunscreen for everyone. My mom was out again today to help. She is as thrilled as I am with this whole process. Thursday, May 1, 2003 Today my uncle was helping me finish the siding. There were a lot of "interruptions" as I was taping segments for the five-part series with Steve from This Old House. That was more work than building the house (smile)! Friday, May 2, 2003 Today was a great day! The DIY Network and Time Warner Cable were here to work on the house. The staff from DIY -- including the president and his wife -- all worked on my home. They traveled from Knoxville , TN and exemplified the spirit of Do It Yourself! The Time Warner volunteers and DIY staff were wonderful. The boys were able to come to the site for the press conference and were thrilled with the house. My oldest son even hammered a nail in his room. My youngest son wanted to "check out" the rest of the property. My dad came out to the house for the first time since we started working on it and was amazed at the progress we had made. We hung drywall in 75 percent of the house. The enthusiasm and skills of the volunteers made the process go smoothly and quickly. I really felt the sincerity from everyone there.
