Materials: Pry bar Utility knife Hammer Tape measure Saw Wood chisel Drill Screwdriver Level Finish nailer Finish nails Framing nailer Framing nails Miter box or miter saw Caulk gun Doors Lumber for jam Paint Caulk Note: Determine the size of the door you will need; common widths are 24, 30, 32, and 36 inches. The standard height is 80", which can be trimmed if necessary make sure you trim from the bottom of the door, not the top!
FramingMany doors come pre-hung, but the ones we used were not that easy. We will make a frame to fit because our door comes with jam pieces pre-drilled and dado cut. Once the doors are framed, we will sit them into place. 1. Tear out the existing trim and casing around the door opening (figure A). 2. Once you have a rough opening, measure. 3. You are ready to assemble your jam and framing around the door on the ground (figure B), using two by fours and a framing nailer. 4. Once this is built and fastened temporarily to the doors, lift the structure into place to dry fit the door (figure C).
5. The dry is very important to the function of the door and it is where you will check for level and plumb (figure D), and use shims to adjust the door accordingly.6. Once lined up and plumb, fasten it into place (figure E). 7. Release the temporary door restraints and therefore the door.
