    In part 1 of this project, host Fuad Reveiz covered the construction of the bookshelves.

    The second part covers the construction of the bed box, footboard the the securing of the bed to the wall.
    The bed box has been assembled, the footboard added and decorative details are in place. All that's left is the addition of decorative molding and paint.

    Part 2 of the Murphy Bed construction rates a 3 on an intermediate remodeling scale of 1-5.

    Materials:

    1 x 12 poplar
    Medium Density Fiberboard (MDF)
    Plywood
    Trim
    2 x 8
    Screws, hardware, angle brackets, barrel bolts and casters
    Paint (the same as used in part 1 of the project)
    Utility knife
    Pry bar
    Circular saw
    Jig saw
    Compound miter saw

    1. To finish the project, begin by adding a piece of trim at the top of the bed box to match the trim on the tops of the bookcases (figure A).

    2. Fill the recessed holes with wood putty, as well as the nail holes on the trim pieces and door panels and the small seam along the sides of the bed box.

    3. Lightly sand the footboard and use an orbital sander on the bed box (figure B). Wipe away residue, then add primer to both pieces.

    4. Paint the footboard to match the bookcases (figure C); paint the bed box to match the walls (figure D).

    5. Next, to hold the bed up, install some simple sliding bolts inside both bookcases. Drill a hole through the bookcase into the bed box, then screw them into place. Place the bolts underneath the shelves so they are completely out of sight.
