In this segment, host Denise Dillon and guest Shane Meder, interior designer, assess the problems with the lighting in this home office.

The room in question is a typical office space. Work by day and if a guest wants to stay over, a bedroom at night, but for either usage the lighting doesn't work.

    • For starters, the reading lamp beside the sofa (figure A) is lower than a book would be. To remedy this problem, Meder is going to have sconces placed above the sofa on either end of the wall art in order to give a nice balance of light to the space.

    • The main problem with the computer area (figure B) is that it's in front of the natural light coming through the windows, not behind it, where it should be. Both the computer and television will be moved to one cabinet on the other side of the room, and a source light will be added.

    • The ceiling fan (figure C) will be dropped down to invite more light into the room.

    • The windows will be defined by painting the wood trim black. The black, according to Meder, will frame the window out making the shutters more prominent.

    • The walls are going to be painted a taupe color. You make think the black and taupe will make the room dark, but Meder says, "I'm calling this drab to fab -- we're going to make the room work for us, not against us."

    • The closet doors, which comprise a short 5' wall, will "disappear" as Meder says, and be upgraded with a paint job, black trim that will make the wall appear longer.

In the next segment, the new ceiling fan is installed.
